This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My creative, musical, funny, smart students and I have worked very hard to grow an instrumental music program at our school. Within our already-tight school community, we have created a special space for music and creativity, and they enjoy performing for the rest of the student body.
I teach instrumental music at a small 6-12 school in a vibrant but high-poverty area of Brooklyn.
For many of our students, my classes are the first time they have had formal instruction in music. In my classroom, students learn to read and write music, play instruments, practice cooperation and collaboration skills, and develop preparedness and perseverance strategies.
My Project
With the help of my administration, I was recently able to obtain a full marching drumline! We are creating brand-new drumline classes for my advanced 7th- and 10th-grade students, and everyone is very excited to get started. There's only one problem: we don't have sticks, and my students cannot afford to buy any themselves.
We need a full set of sticks and mallets so my students can actually *play* their new drums.
We can do a number of things without them, but my kids need appropriate sticks and mallets for their instruments to learn marching percussion techniques. With these implements, they can begin performing in class, for the school, and the community at large.
