Students with an Autism Spectrum Disorder need organization and a place to be themselves. At our small neighborhood school, we service kids from kindergarten to fourth grade with Autism Spectrum Disorders. We work to encourage these students to reach their highest potential both in the Special Education and Regular Education Setting.
When the students enter my Autistic support classroom they are provided with experiences that meet them where they are and push to move them to be as independent as possible.
Often times this can be challenging for students with Autism. Providing routine, organization, structure, and independent choice activities allow these students to learn and grow.
My Project
Research tells us kids with severe and profound disabilities often get sub-par literacy instruction. Part of that is based on people’s assumptions about the abilities of students with complex disabilities, the idea that instructional materials should only focus on functional or sight word instruction, and fact that language skills are generally lacking for students in this population (Citeseerx, 2017).
Students with special needs need a variety of instructional resources that meet them at their current level of functioning.
What this means for a special educator is lots of time and materials are needed to make this possible. I use supplies such as paper, Velcro, lamination sheets, glue, markers, and crayons to make the instructional materials that are need to reach these students. One of the main ways I will use these materials is by creating adapted books for literacy instruction.
