Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at an incredibly diverse public high school with over 3500 students grades 9 - 12. Our students come from various backgrounds, many are immigrants or first generation U.S. citizens. There are over 40 different languages spoken at home, with many students who speak Polish, Spanish, Arabic, Farsi, Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Portuguese, Turkish, Russian, or other languages at home.
I specialize in a class called "Math Skills;" my student is a young person who has struggled with math for most of their school career.
They did not pass Algebra 1 in grade 9, so they are retaking Algebra 1 in grade 10. My course is a required co-requisite of grade 10 Algebra 1. My course is designed to give these students the added attention they need in a smaller class setting [16 students] and at a slower pace than the entire year of Algebra 1. We work on the topics which challenge our young people and give them extra practice so they can successfully pass Algebra 1.
My Project
Post-It Notes has made amazing little graph pages that we can use during class to create a small graph directly into a notebook. Students love interactive textiles and these Post-It Notes add just enough excitement to their notebooks to keep them internally motivated to make a nice graph.
High school students have a short attention span, but by using these sticky notes in their notebook, we increase the amount of time they will focus on an activity.
Instead of having students use full sheets of graph paper that will get lost or having them purchase an expensive grid ruled notebook to do their graphs, using these sticky notes we can put the graph directly into the chart.
Another use is to make the graph and then use it as a pop-up in their notebook. They can write words under the graphs such as directly proportional, inversely proportional, the equation they were graphing, etc. They could write the correct answer under the sticky note and then when they go back and study they can use the sticky note for practice and then see the correct answer once they have solved the problem.
Thank you so much for supporting my project for these fun, interactive graphing sticky notes. And thank you, Post-It, for making such great manipulatives.
