Reading is one of the most important things a child can learn. Teaching first graders in a suburban school allows me the opportunity to not only teach children to read but to instill in children a love of reading. This love of reading will stay with them for a lifetime. Since many of my students do not have access to books except ones that I copy for them, I want my students to be able to take a canvas bag each weekend with a variety of books to read and enjoy at home. This parent child special reading time will promote a positive attitude towards reading and also allow for some quality time between the parent and child. Parents and students will "stick their nose in a good book". To begin my students will need canvas bags to decorate with a reading theme. Then when the bags are dry, I will include a variety of picture books and easy readers for the students to take home. I will include one easy reader for each student to keep along with a reading log for the parents to sign and record the books read. The student will return the bag on Monday and we will keep them on a coat stand until the next weekend. Research has shown that when parents and children read together, the children become stronger readers. In a busy world where many boys and girls go home and play video games and watch t.v., it will be refreshing for the parents of my 25 students to take some time during their weekend to "stick their nose in a good book"!
