My students need supplies such as glue sticks, reward stickers, Avery Address Labels to make trick word cards, and magnets to display work on magnetic backgrounds.
On the west wall of my room, you'll see a world map. Under the map are tiny flags for each country. Often it is to these flags that my new students are drawn, for my students are coming from many areas around the world. They may be too young to point to the geographical location of their native land on a map, but they know their flag and become excited when they see it. My students are learning English.
Their identities are being molded as they blend traditional customs to the values of their new home, the USA.
It is important to me that they maintain their pride in their homeland while gradually learn to navigate the language and expectations in our democracy.
My Project
My students need to have something to hold and see over and over again to help them learn. I make decks of trick words for them using the Avery address labels with the words printed on. The children can then review their own words.
What do labels, magnets, stickers, and glue sticks all have in common?
They are all adhesive! We cannot have enough magnets. These bright colorful discs will be used to quickly display work on the magnetic surfaces of the steel cabinet doors. The glue sticks will be used in many ways; one example is unscrambling sentences, then writing the sentence which is followed by an illustration. The stickers will be applied to the hard work done by the students. Finally, the purple pens are to be used in comments and corrections.
