Do you remember the first time you saw a giraffe? Have you ever fed a llama and had him take the bucket from your hand? Due to budget cuts, we are seeking alternative funding for a field trip to the Virginia Safari Park.
Our school serves at-risk 3-5 year old children in our community.
For many of our students, this field trip is their first experience of its kind. Actually seeing the animals they have been studying cements their learning in a way that is more effective and meaningful than just looking at pictures in a book. Our school only takes two field trips each year and, with your help, we will be able to provide this rich experience for our children.
My Project
This trip will reinforce the concepts the children are learning: living vs. nonliving, characteristics of animals, habitats, and more. The impact will be far-reaching as they study these concepts more in depth in future grades. As concrete thinkers, a hands-on experience is the optimal way for children this age to learn.
As children progress through elementary, middle and high school, basic concepts are built upon and expanded.
Children who have prior knowledge when beginning a new unit are more likely to grasp the new material more easily. This trip opens opportunities for rich lessons in science, writing, vocabulary, and more, which will give our children a solid foundation for their educational future.
