Jaime Escalante once stated, Ask 'How will they learn best?' not 'Can they learn?' There are many different methods for students to learn how to read, write, and speak a new language. One way is a picture dictionary. Please give these young individuals the resource they need to be fluent in the English language.
My English Language Learners want to be heard.
There are roughly 6,500 spoken languages in the world today. However, English is the language that is mostly used in the classroom. These students want to be proficient in the English language. They want to flourish academically and personally in the United States. With your help, this goal is attainable. Learning how to articulate themselves will give them the words they need to move forward.
My Project
Learning a new language in a new country can be difficult. However, a homemade picture dictionary can help since many of my students are visual learners. Many words have more than one definition. For example: BOLT - It has at least 4 definitions. It can mean fast, a strike of lightning, to lock, or a type of metal. Besides learning the word of the day, my class learns an idiom at least two times a week. The English language is very colorful. My students will understand the terminology of the actual phrase instead of its literal meaning.
My students love cementing their word of the day and idioms in their notebooks.
Almost every day, they paste a strip piece of paper in their notebooks. On that piece of paper, they are learning Tier 2 words and idioms with their definitions, how they are used in the correct context in a sentence, and illustrations. The glue sticks are in constant use to increase their English vocabulary.
Their homemade picture dictionary will enhance and reinforce their understanding of the English Language.
