Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In October, Santa Rosa was devastated by wild fires. Our school community was greatly impacted by the fires. Students and faculty lost their homes to the fires, many families were evacuated, for days. Our school and all schools in our district were closed for 3 weeks. Many people in our area lost everything. Our school has donated to relief efforts, for kids and families. As we move forward, our school community has become a more closely knit group, kids working together to take care of each other.
This year my students have also been involved in raising a service dog for a local service organization, Canine Companions for Independence; this will be the third puppy we have raised to serve people with disabilities.
My students become actively involved in the puppy raising process and get to know the severely handicapped students on our campus. Our service dog project helps my kids develop compassion and empathy.
My science classroom is an active and engaged learning environment. For many kids, it is their first exposure to investigative learning. We work together to learn and understand the world around us, and at the same time we learn to work with each other.
My Project
My students are working to organize materials in our science lab and trying to support school spirit. Using the requested Silhouette Cameo 3 Machine and adhesive sheets, they will be creating science themed decals and transfers to promote our school and their projects. The items they create will be directly related to the work we are doing in class. I am hoping this will transfer into excitement for the curriculum and engage them in the learning activities. The objects they create will be posted around the classroom and the campus. This experience will give them skills in production, collaboration organization, all skills they will need as they move forward in their educational careers.
