I am a homeroom teacher teaching Reading, Writing, Math, Art, Music and Sign Language in a classroom with 7th and 8th grade students diagnosed as severely emotionally and behaviorally disturbed. We are in a high-need community at a public school where all students are on a free lunch program. Our budget was significantly cut this year and we are left with nothing more than desks and tables and any supplies left over from last year.

My students are lively but struggling learners who have a growing interest in their world and environment but lack the academic strength to express themselves. None of them have had a real art class and are caught doodling or drawing in the middle of our writing workshop as an escape from their academic struggles. They long to express themselves but often can't write the words so they come up with vivid descriptions and stick-figured drawings to try to get their anger, sadness, excitement or thrill out of their bodies and into their world. My students are longing to be heard and listened to through their art, however, our lined recycled notebook paper, and dollar store pencils aren't cutting it. (Not to mention they have an actress, not an painter as a teacher!)

My students would greatly benefit from how-to drawing DVDs that can walk them through the art of sketching and help them craft their drawing skills. I would also love to see them with their own pencil sets and sketch books so they could be prideful of their work and show it off- something they rarely find themselves wanting to do. If they had the materials and resources they deserve, they would be much more invested and proud of their accomplishments.

Your help will ensure that my students are able to express themselves and have the proper tools to explore and discover the big, mean, and often scary world around them. You will give my students the voices they long for and the confidence they need to move through their anger and develop a skill to be proud of.
