Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Bright, motivated, enthusiastic, eclectic, resilient, tenacious, humble, compassionate... these are just a few words that describe my students, a Title I charter school. Nestled in between a railroad track and the metro rail my students bloom like the lotus flower out of mud as it is not where you are from that makes you who you are. Their resilience and drive motivates and inspires me to continue to push them to new limits, to strive for resources so that they may have a chance at achieving their dreams.

My Project

Established micropropagation laboratory techniques are used to create suitable growing conditions for plant micro propagation. In order to reduce contamination so that propagated plants have higher chances of surviving from seedlings or clippings, students must work under a sterile environment. The laminar flow hood allows students to create a sterile environment to perform micro propagation techniques and grow plants in test tubes or other vesicles, reducing contamination and offering the seedling or propagules an increase chance of yielding viable plants. Students will be using these propagating techniques to reintroduction local, rare species, into the quickly changing urban landscape that is Hialeah. The laminar hood will be used directly in this project to work under sterile conditions and to reduce contamination while students propagate plants. The hood will also be used in future projects that require sterile working conditions reducing contamination.
