Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is and always has been a room for personal growth. I currently teach students in the S.T.E.P.S. program. These students are from the ages 18-22. They have chosen to return to school in order to learn life skills needed for adulthood. Career preparation, community based instruction, daily living skills, social/emotional skills, communication skills, etc. are all courses that I teach. Everyone in my classroom has Autism Spectrum Disorder. A few have multiple disorders/diagnosis. The setting is a self-contained class, so I see many of the students for the majority of the day. I have had the privilege to work with my students since they were in elementary! I have moved along with them and have been able to witness their academic and personal growths.
My Project
The purpose of this project is to jump start the school year. The first few weeks of the semester, the students get down and dirty. They revitalize their school garden. Summer's in Homestead, Florida can be brutal and garden maintenance is much needed. Garden beds must be cleaned out, all weeds must be pulled, seeds need to be set and plants need to be pruned. Help our crew get the beds prepared for all the yummy goodness of fresh vegetables, herbs and fruit! This garden is so special to us. It encourages positive peer connections and provides an opportunity for independent functioning/life skills to flourish.
