Mrs. Wesley from Bessemer AL is requesting supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need resources to assist them with close reading: Black Wipe Markers, Research Comprehension Center, Main Idea and Context Bingo, and Sight Words Cards.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
A typical day in my classroom is a session with students in need of intervention, additional skill instruction, guided practice, and application of skills. By the end of the school year I want my students to be proficient, scoring ready to exceeding on the state's benchmark assessment.
I am an Instructional Coach in a school located in a community classified as economically disadvantaged.
At this time my focus grade is grade 3, particularly 34 targeted students. Recent formative assessments indicated that these students are very close to the proficiency lines considered points of proficiency in Reading academic skills. The students are motivated and eager to achieve but lack literacy resources outside of school. My goal is to close the gap of achievement and empower these students to step up to the lines of ready and exceeding benchmarks. To do this, I pull the students for instructional sessions. 6 of the students come to my room Monday through Thursday. The remaining students participate in Extended Day tutoring sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays and 2 Saturdays per month (Saturday Academy). The students are grouped according to their formative assessment lexile levels. This tool aids me in matching students with appropriate Reading texts .
The resources requested are needed to supplement some materials that I currently have. The Black Write and Wipe Markers will accommodate all 34 students to use with the comprehension cards. The Main Idea Bingo activity will reinforce this key comprehension skill. Bingo is a fun way to practice skills and students enjoy the interaction. The Research and Respond Comprehension Center is a high interest activity. It will provide nonfiction comprehension previews. More emphasis now in education is on nonfiction reading. With this resource students will research skills across content areas in nonfiction. An increase in comprehension is expected. Evidence of comprehension will be demonstrated through written responses at the end of each story, responding to follow up questions. A high percentage of the state's end of the year assessment is on nonfiction content.
Donations to my project will improve my classroom of pull out students.
High interest activities and resources create excitement for reading. When students are motivated to read they read more often. Reading breeds reading. It's encouraging to see students choose to read on their own and develop a love for reading. Motivated reading also improves comprehension because students attend to text. I want to empower students with every resource necessary and possible to help them succeed.
