Mrs. Bowman from Louisville KY is requesting supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need a science curriculum and an early literacy curriculum that is accessible to them.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Reading is a favorite subject among the students in my class. Not only do they love to read the plethora of engaging books we have, thanks to donors on Donor's Choose, but they are on vastly different levels from just grasping early literacy skills to reading grade level material proficiently.
My students are kids in Kindergarten through 5th grade who are truly hard workers and love coming to school.
Because of various circumstances and disabilities, my students benefit from very systematic instruction, multiple opportunities to learn new information, and multiple opportunities to respond to new learning. To allow my students full access to the general education curriculum, I adapt and modify everything to fit their abilities and their needs to allow them the opportunity to have the best outcomes post high school.
These materials will be used to further my ability to teach early literacy skills and science concepts to my students. They will be used at least weekly in our room by me and my 2 assistants with each and every student in our class. The Pathways to Literacy is for my students who are still at an object level of communication, who do not quite grasp the concept of abstract pictures and words in books. This will help them by pairing objects to books in order to give them the tools they need to make the right connections between themselves, their world, and the books they read. The Science kit will be used to teach all of my students basic science concepts during our science block. The objects in the kit will be reviewed later in the year with students to promote maintenance and generalization of all they have learned as well.
These materials will make a difference in our classroom.
First, they give the students the materials they need to learn early literacy skills (such as turning pages in a book, pointing to words as they are read, recognizing pictures in a book, etc) and science concepts in a way that makes sense to them. Secondly, by having these curriculum sets, it enables me the time that I normally would have spent making materials so that I can focus on other important skills such as communication.
