Stepping Into the Digital Age
My students need an iPad to advance their computer skills and experience the reality of the digital world for educational research, math and literacy apps.
Have you ever learned a new language? What kinds of tools helped you? My students are all language learners. I want each of them to experience the thrill and support provided by an interactive tablet. I hope that each student can enjoy the opportunities provided by using an iPad educationally.
I work in an Urban public school.
67% of our student body speak a language other than English at home and 74% receive free or reduced lunch. I work in a dual language immersion classroom where the 18 students are becoming bilingual in Spanish and English. I myself support their language learning in addition to their general education. Our school is a K-2nd grade school. We partner with a sister school to de-segregate the community. Thus the school is a beautiful place where children of all walks of life have an opportunity to share, feel valued and learn about all different ways of growing up. The most interesting part for me is that in my classroom at all times we are all learning about the world around us, the curriculum, one another and each person's different language assets.
As recent cuts in education our school has been forced change our technology and computer education. We no longer have a specials class where students are able to engage weekly with all that computers and the internet can teach us. Now this pressure falls onto the classroom teacher. I am forced to use just 5 computer to teach all 18 of my students everything that they need to know about computers. My students LOVE using computers for many different reasons and strongly believe that my being able to work with students one on one, in small groups and large group with the iPad would teach them many additional technology skills need to advance in this digital age. I would look forward to using visuals from the internet to support language learning, I would let children practice reading, math, language, writing, science and social studies on the iPad. I am convinced that every student deserves the opportunity to be educated about the digital world in which we live.
Providing children with a new, exciting and engaging opportunity for hands-on and guided learning is irreplaceable.
Thank you for your support in helping me teach 18 1st graders about the new and exciting digital world.
