Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a rural, public school district where the majority of our students live at or below the poverty level. We work at a school with an extremely high percentage of limited English proficiency students (LEPs). We have a high population of reduced-price or free lunch participants. We are constantly dealing with financial issues as budgets are regularly changing leaving us with reduced funding and limited resources. Our students want the chance to learn and to get the best education we can give them.
Our struggles include: poverty, trauma, and other outside obstacles.
While our kids love learning to read with books on their levels with supportive pictures, these resources are hard to come by. They are also learning a new language and parents struggle at home to provide them with the necessary tools. Yet, we are eager and excited to try new things and explore the real-life learning that these books can provide. We are lifelong learners and excited to start our impact on the world!
My Project
This project will benefit four teachers and all of their students. We are blessed with some of these materials already, but not enough for all of the students that we serve.
Research shows that students learn best by participating through modeled examples given by their teachers.
By having access to accurately leveled reading materials geared towards ESL students, through the use of the Literacy Footprints kit, we will be able to not only teach reading, but also teach the necessary skills to acquire the English language. Students will learn through beautifully written and illustrated books that give them a strong foundation in reading and language skills. These kits will also include letter trays and manipulative letters for students to use in learning and applying letter sounds to reading and writing. The Literacy Footprints materials will allow students to read, write, listen, and speak all while improving their language skills!
