Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I would love to host a Family Engagement Event for my students and their families to create forever family stepping stones for my new school garden. I currently teach a wonderful group of first graders in an urban school setting. I teach Reading, Language Arts, Writing, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies at a Title 1 school. Most of my students are English Language Learners and some have special needs. I understand how STEM education is important to the future of my students. I also know that students learn best through experiential, hands-on learning. But, I also want to involve my students' families in the process of their learning.
My Project
School gardening has been shown to increase self-esteem, help students develop a sense of ownership and responsibility, help foster relationships with family members, and increase parental involvement. My students and their families will use these ceramic tiles and markers to make permanent lasting memories.
During this Family Engagement Event, families will be introduced to my school's new garden and the STEM garden curriculum that is aligned to my Pre K- 5 State and Next Gen Standards.
School gardens tend to increase students' interest in eating fruits and vegetables and also improves attitudes towards fruits and vegetables. Exposure to a school garden increases family vegetable consumption and the variety of vegetables eaten. Consumption of fruits and vegetables in childhood leads to higher fruit and vegetable consumption as adults and can help to prevent or delay chronic disease conditions.
Your funding of this project will ensure that my students and their families will improve their life skills, including working with groups and self-understanding. Other students in my school and their families will also benefit from your funding when they also attend this Family Engagement Event.
