This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach a self-contained classroom of "exceptional children" with various "different" abilities. Autism, Learning disabilities, ADHD, visual impairment, and physical challenges are just some of the obstacles, my students, face daily. The one thing they all have in common is the need for sensory input.
Transitioning from one location to another in a straight line is a struggle for any middle schooler.
For my students and the others that will encounter this path moving from one location to another will now engage the mind as well as the body.
My Project
No more "Straight-line please!" Connecting the mind and body helps with concentration and focus. Every section of the path will be arranged so that students can move and interact with the environment and each other.
Each portion of the path will present a physical quest, hopping, skipping, pushing, walking to balance, jumping jacks, etc that will make the journey from one location to another an adventure.
Having this colorful sensory path in place will give my students a way to get the bio-feedback they need to help spark creativity in the classroom while giving the "wiggle" in their steps purpose.
