We are "THE RAT LAB" an innovative, hands-on, interactive, departmentalized, fourth-grade classroom, and fifth grade, exposing a total of 180 students, ninety minutes daily, to either Social Studies (Civics & History) or to various areas of the Sciences or Health topics.
"The Rat Lab" is part of the largest elementary in our rural county, nestled at the foot of the Appalachian Mountains.
Our school educates and impacts the lives of over five hundred (500) students, on a daily basis, 180 days a year. Approximately, 80% or higher, of our students are classified in the low socio-economic class.
Currently, we are facing the effects of the Covid and Drug Epidemic leaving in their wake the innocent victims, our students. The decline in the coal industry has created a ripple effect on the future occupations in our great mountain home.
We strive to provide our students with a brighter educational future, despite the obstacles in their daily lives. Many of our parents are dedicated, loving, and strive to provide their children with opportunities, to make their futures more promising. It is our responsibility as educators and as human beings to meet the emotional/physical/educational needs of all.
My Project
Children live their entire lives learning about their bodies. What they are made of, how they work, how are they connected, and what are their roles in the functioning of their existence. They never get to see these actual parts and watch their interactions.
For thirty year plus, I have utilized my own body, and yes, Halloween skeletons, to teach human body systems.
A good teacher, has to do, what a good teacher has to do, to get the material to remain in a child's brain for a lifetime of learning.
What if a model of the skeletal sysytem, the framework of every human, and the dental system, were available right before their very eyes? Imagine the possibilities of learning. This would provide hands on, interactive learning of how the human systems come together to allow each and everyone of us to go about our daily lives and how the dental system provides the nourishment for these sysytems to operate.
Children in today's classroom are surrounded by technology, but it is time to come back to the basics....get down to the BONES of learning. I am striving to do this by providing them a resource that these children will NEVER have the opportunity to experience and possibly inspire some of them to enter the medical field later in life.
