I am a K/1 teacher and I teach all subjects.

Our school is predominantly minority, consisting of 80% African American, 15% Latino, 3% white and 2% other. We are also urban, low socio-economic, and 91% free lunch. "College for Certain" is our motto, and it is lived out by students, teachers, and families at our school. I would like to use the Trait Crates to increase the word choice, conventions and organizational writing skills of students who come to us with low verbal skills and language experience.

My Project

With the Trait Crates, I could really bring writing alive, make it more meaningful and create an environment where students will create. Writing should become better and the understanding of curriculum goals, such as ideas, voice, organization, sentence fluency, word choice and conventions.

Since the regular diet of brainstorm, pre-write, rough draft and final are not increasing learning, I feel that this new avenue would be great.

My students will benefit greatly from these resources which are tailored to their independent writing level.
