Step Out of the Box Into the Band: Read Music and Win!

My students need seven different music theory learning supplies such as rhythm and note reading flashcards to learn to read music and effectively play their instruments.

I teach instrumental music to 4th, 5th and 6th grade students in an urban neighborhood. My students are high risk for gang involvement, drug use, other crime and violence and dropping out of school. Many of my students have witnessed gang and domestic violence first hand, which in some cases, has left them without a parent or other family member. Being in the band/orchestra gives them a sense of personal achievement, instant success and perhaps more importantly, community. In order for them to reach the highest goal that I have set for them, and that is to read music fluently, I need theory supplies to help support my program. Unfortunately, there is no current budget for these supplies. If I had flashcards for note reading and rhythm skills, theory books and games to reinforce their learning, it would benefit them greatly as many of them are tactile and visual learners. Your support in this endeavor would greatly benefit my students. Not only will you help them to read and understand music better, you will be helping them to achieve higher English reading and comprehension skills, math skills and social studies skills. They will learn to process and become better critical thinkers, hopefully keeping them off the streets and in doors learning their instrument. I thank you for your considering this project.
