Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a Physical Education teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences. Physical. Ed. is more than just running and throwing balls. My students enjoy learning how to be healthy and work together.
They like to move, they love to read and love lots of positive attention.
Many of them are being raised in single parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. From the minute they walk in the gym or cafeteria, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hoping to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic success.
My Project
Thank you for taking to read more about my project and my students! My students live in the South Bronx. Many come from low-income housing but that doesn't stop them from being the best they can be! We are very fortunate to have a spacious gymnasium. Students only have PE class once a week! I am always looking for innovative ways to educate my students about fitness. When students enter class, they start with a warm up which usually involves running. Lessons and activities are designed to teach students about health concepts that they can use and know for life such as cardiovascular endurance.
Pedometers would an incredibly easy way to teach students about fitness.
Many people wear fitness trackers to measure their steps, heart rates and keep other data about their level of fitness. My students in grades K-5 would LOVE pedometers to the very same thing. They would take pride in wearing them in whatever unit of study we would do. Whether we do running or basketball, students will be able to see how much they've accomplished when they look at the numbers on these pedometers.
With your help, we can provide hard working students who love to play and exercise become life time lovers of exercise and fitness.
