My Students

My students are a diverse mix of energetic, intelligent, and curious 9 and 10-year-olds who need resources to truly excel. My school is an urban, high-poverty school that strives to do what's best for the kids, but we often don't have the budget for the "extras", and by "extras" I mean basic supplies, books, technology, field trips, etc. These are the things that can make a significant positive impact on student learning and growth. Many of my students have had traumatic backgrounds, have learned English as a second language (ESL), or have families that struggle to simply put food on the table. Despite these challenges, they thrive when presented with the opportunity to do so.

My intention is to work each and every day to help close the opportunity gap facing the wonderful students in my classroom.

My Project

It is said that books provide mirrors, windows, and doors. Unfortunately many of my students do not have books at home so keeping my classroom library filled with with current, high interest books is critical. In this project I have requested high-interest, non-fiction, STEM related books; both picture books and chapter books to fill our classroom library shelves. Examples of titles include HowThings Work, The Girl With a Mind for Math, and The Wondrous Workings of Planet Earth: Understanding Our World and Its Ecosystems.

STEM, combined with literacy, reading fluency and comprehension skills are critical in helping my students thrive and close the opportunity gap.

My students are so full of curiosity and wonder and they need books available to help spark their interest in STEM areas. Providing them with great books and fun project ideas will bring science, technology, engineering, and math to life for them. They'll have more opportunities to ask/answer questions, solve problems, design, redesign and invent.
