Inquisitive, wonderfully inspired describes the Kindergateners that attend our school. This school year I will be transitioning from a first grade teacher to a Kindergarten teacher in a high-needs urban area. 85% of the students qualify for Title One services.
The majority of my little students will consist of English Language Learners who are eager to learn.
Although many speak the English language, they have a limited vocabulary. Living in a low poverty area, the majority of my students do not experience the world outside their neighborhoods. Thus, their acquisition of the English language is delayed because many of the things they read about they have never experienced.
My Project
Why do things do what they do? Why do cars roll? What makes a bridge strong? How are colors made? These are just some of the types of questions Kindergarteners ask. They are very cute inquisitive. Their little minds are busy thinking about the world in which we live. They love to build things. They like to tinker. They love to think of an idea and try it out. It is so exciting to watch them as they get an idea, try it out, and it works!
STEM is in the world all around my Kindergarteners.
In buildings, bridges, and the community in which they live. In my classroom my students will spend the year exploring Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, hands on. I want my students to discover how things work, grow and change using hands on experiences. We will read and discuss picture books that focus on STEM, and then explore ideas from the books using different types of materials. The Design and Build Engineering Kit and Building Brick STEM Challenge Kit will add to the materials that will be available to my students to explore and have fun learning STEM in the classroom.
If you donate to my project you will be providing my little Kindergarteners with more tools to help the become more independent critical thinkers and doers.
