My students need hands-on items to make history come to life: building bricks to help us incorporate STEM, period artifacts to make the stories realistic, and storage tubs to preserve these items for future uses.
I love my school and my students. My students are bright and curious. They are caring and courageous. They are eager to learn.
In our uniqueness lies our strength.
My students are wonderfully diverse. My school is a Title I school in a large suburban community. The school serves 668 students in grades Pre-K through fifth grade. The majority of the students are classified as economically disadvantaged. The student body is culturally diverse; 3.4% are classified as American Indian/AK Native, 2.3% are identified as Asian, 0.2% identify as HI/Pacific Islander, 20.8% are classified as black, non-Hispanic, 10.4% are categorized as Hispanic. White, non-Hispanic students account for 63.1% of the student body, while 11.7% identify as two or more races.
My Project
When my students begin to learn about the formation of the United States, I want them to have a trunk full of interesting colonial period items. STEM will be enhanced by the interlocking bricks, colonial STEM and Benjamin Franklin books. Maritime navigation tools, such as a sexton and astrolabe, compass, and telescope will allow students to experience the technology used during that time. Hats and costumes as well as colonial period games will help set the stage for what life was like for the colonists in that time.
A hands-on approach to learning American history is what my students need to be successful.
Students learn history best when they have examples of artifacts to examine. Integrating STEM will increase the rigor, add equity, and increase the engagement for all students. Having replicas of items that colonists would have used and clothing that they would have worn will make learning about American history more memorable and engaging for my students. Plastic storage tubs will help these items to last through several years.
This project will allow my students to have more opportunities to experience STEM and will help my students to increase their reading and math skills while they learn history.
