Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are middle schoolers at a Title I school in New York. My students come from diverse backgrounds and many from tough homes. They are overcoming social and emotional barriers each day to receive an education.
My students are active and enthusiastic.
They are motivated and eager to do well. They want to learn and are constantly seeking opportunities to take ownership of their learning.
Our school is in a high needs and poverty area in which most children are on free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch programs. My students work hard despite the challenges they face. Many students stay after school, participate in after-school clubs and activities and are always striving to be, and do, better for themselves and for others.
My Project
Students will improve their classroom environment by growing and caring for plants. These materials will allow my students to work together to set up plant life and greenery in the classroom, establish class jobs and responsibilities to maintain the plant life, and provide for a more hands-on approach to learning about plants. Students will engage in real world learning.
This project has the power to establish a life-long love of planting, gardening, and science for my learners!
We are working diligently to help our students become life-long learners through STEM lessons. The micro:bit, clips, soil sensor, and book will allow us to code self-watering options for these plants. Students will have the ability work with technology and living objects.
There are countless coding applications for the micro:bits, including getting the micro:Bit to respond to different events/input, developing pixel-art inspired designs and design sequences, and writing words on the LED screen. I know the students will pick up on the coding for micro:bits as well as enjoying the real life application of having the plants to work with.
