My Students

My class is full of 25 bright, curious kindergarten students. They were placed in my full-day class because they are starting their education already far behind. For most of them, preschool learning opportunities were unavailable or very limited due to the pandemic. For many, this is their first group social experience. Our school is in an area where many students experience poverty which has been worsened during COVID-19. These challenges affect their ability to learn in a year that is critical to their learning throughout their lives.

My Project

As a full-day class for at-risk kindergarten students, much of our learning is focused on basic reading, writing, and math skills. After losing early childhood educational opportunities during the pandemic, my students also need opportunities to engage in daily social learning experiences that will teach them to solve problems, new language skills, and how to get along with others.

The materials for this project are chosen to help students learn language, math, and science concepts through exploration.

Building materials like Legos allow for a wide variety of learning activities that push students to think hard while having fun. For example, students might be challenged to build the tallest structure they can with only 20 blocks or to design a structure to protect someone on a hot day. Projects like this also allow students to develop teamwork, leadership, and expressive language skills as they work together to reach a common goal.

Other items included in this project will enable students to be safe and communicate efficiently while using our STEM items. Basic materials like erasers and a pencil sharpener will support students in adding written language to the skills they will use. LCD writing boards will allow all students to participate in writing, solving math problems, and drawing diagrams without our dry erase markers constantly needing to be replaced. KN95 masks and a sprayer for cleaner will help keep our class safe and clean as we get back to learning together again!
