My students need a rotary cutter, tool kit, accessories, glue, and safety gloves and goggles for learning about repairing and upcycling and building STEM skills.
My students in Life Prep class are creative, mindful, and excited to learn new skills to prepare them for the future. Together we practice skills including budgeting, communicating, leading, organizing, cooking, sewing, and working as a team. We are fortunate to be able to adjust our plans based off of what students want to do and they love that!
My 9th-12th grade students love to learn new skills and hack the world around them to make it work better for them.
They enjoy upcycling, improving, and repairing to personalize their world. They need more opportunities to practice STEM skills in their own spaces.
My Project
My students love exploring the world and finding ways to improve the things around them. Despite this interest, many students are intimidated when it comes to repairing their own items and throw them away instead. Many think of STEM skills in science or math classes without realizing that these skills are all around them on a daily basis. To help them gain comfort around tools and give them an opportunity to practice repairing things for the future, we need some more tools in our classroom.
I will introduce the students to our tools and then give them an opportunity to improve our space with their own creative designs and teamwork.
They will use the rotary cutter and toolkit to upcycle finds from their lives and make student selected improvements to our classroom space. Students will practice DIY using these tools and resources. They will also practice workshop safety by using cutting gloves, air masks, and safety goggles.
