This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The best two words to describe my students are "diverse" and "curious." The 24 unique students in my class include general education students, five students with autism and nine students with IEPs. Each student in my class has their own learning style, and I try to meet each student where they are and discover they learn to bring them to where they need to be academically. All of the students in my class are from low-income families and live in rented apartments and homes or in the nearby homeless shelter.
As a Title I school in an economically disadvantaged area, 100% of our students are on free lunch.
All of my students love the hands-on lessons and are curious to find out why thing work the way they do. Sadly, with the financial limitations of the community, parents cannot afford to help supply the classroom with the everyday tools needed to make hands-on learning readily available. Many of my students come to school lacking the basic supplies needed for learning, so as a classroom teacher, my colleagues and I provide most of the supplies the students use each day.
My Project
Hands-on science STEM tubs will help my students learn about scientific theories and actually experience the scientific process that makes the learning concrete. Through your generous help, students will have the opportunities to create mini-airplanes, test their design, and redesign as necessary to make better airplanes. They will engineer a bridge using wooden planks that will have to span 8 inches and see which design can carry the greatest load. Students will use the pattern blocks to discover symmetry in 2D and 3D shapes.

It is the actual manipulation of materials that helps students discover their passions. The more opportunities students are given to plan, test, re-evaluate the plan, and test again, the more authentic is the learning process.
