I teach in a school that is in its third year of the Leader in Me. This culture gives every child an opportunity to be a leader in their own way. Students are leading their own learning and setting goals to reach their fullest potential. I am starting my 6th year of teaching. I have only taught kindergarten and could not imagine myself teaching anything else.
My classroom is filled with 22 eager five-year-olds that are excited about learning and improving their character every day.
For most, this is their first experience in a school. Their excitement about learning motivates me to make every day the best learning experience for them!
My Project
I want to create several STEM bins with activities in them that will help students grow their creativity and imagination. STEM bins are hands-on activities that can be used to build and increase fine motor movements. Some students that come to kindergarten have never held a pencil before and can't even begin to learn how to write their name. STEM bins will give them the opportunity to grow their fine motor movements.
Not only are STEM bins great for building fine motor movement, it gives students the opportunity to create and use their imagination.
STEM bins are a developmentally appropriate form of engineering for 5 and 6 year old kiddos. Also, these activities will give students the opportunity to work together and collaborate on a common goal. Social skills are important to learn in kindergarten. Students working together with STEM bins will give them the opportunity to build their social skills.
STEM bins have so many purposes in the classroom and I would love to give my students all of the opportunities I can to build lifelong learners.
