When I think about my students, I think of funny, energetic, and talented young kiddos. My students have the same needs as a typical student. They need consistency, clear communication, and compassionate teachers. They just learn a little differently. I want my students to know that they are just as valuable as any other student, and they too can be successful no matter the circumstances.
At school, they get the consistency they need to help them grow up and live healthy lives.
Not only do we teach them reading, writing, math, science, and history, we also teach them the importance of being healthy and making healthy decisions.
My Project
According to my students, school is like a "prison" where they have no voice, little input in their own education, and few freedoms. One of the major issues they brought to my attention was having to sit hour after hour in class with so much energy to contain. They explained the overall sense of discomfort the chairs bring them and how that effects their ability to focus in class. Sitting in an uncomfortable and static position, class period after class period, often results in inappropriate behaviors. These behaviors often include the unsafe use of chairs (leaning back in the chairs), loss of focus, and distracting fidgets. Therefore, one problem faced by my middle school community is the negative effects that traditional chairs have on my student’s education and overall health.
Knowing how little input students usually have on their own education, including classroom furniture (something that directly affects them), I asked what we should do.
Their solution? Since STEM includes health science, allow students to sit in alternative chairs that can improve their overall health and understanding of health. Alternative chairs can also increase a students’ ability to focus, get out energy appropriately, and improve posture. Therefore, we are asking for your donation to help us create a more inclusive and healthy classroom experience with yoga ball chairs and wobble chairs.
