STEM to STEAM: A Shared Journey through the Design Process
Help me give my students four iPads to empower them to share their #CourageToCreate as they document how they are navigating the engineering and creative design processes, through inquiry and project-based learning in our STEAM focused classroom!
My students come from a small, close-knit community that is full of school spirit! We are a Title I school, with a majority of our students coming from low-income households.
MPMS students are proud to be a part of the nation's first PreK-12 STEAM campus and they love opportunities for project-based learning where they can showcase their own creativity and innovation!
The iPads we're hoping to obtain will provide my students with the tools they need to open our classroom to a wider audience through student produced and student curated project artifacts, giving them an even stronger ownership over their work. I've seen my students confidently approach problems and work with tenacity to develop outstanding solutions. I want to enable them to share their journey so that others can see just how amazing they are as well! After the first phase of this project, we have been able to begin the process of documenting projects using iPads. Through this second phase we will be able to provide an iPad at each work station, which will allow more student access as we work to create opportunities for students to present their work to a wider audience.
My Project
Students in my classroom engage in hands-on, project-based learning through robotics, engineering design, and a variety of STEM fields. Through documenting, curating, and sharing their progress through these projects, they will develop a confident voice and pride in their work.
Our STEM based projects will grow as STEAM integrated opportunities as we explore video production, visual design, photography, and more!
Literacy will be creatively woven into the project process through student created blogs, websites, and more as we seek authentic opportunities to share our classroom story.
We have an amazing classroom environment with 8 built-in work stations. We currently need 4 additional iPads to provide an iPad for each of the 8 workstations so that students can easily access them to document their journey, and ultimately share it with a larger audience. This shared work will become a source of pride for my students that will propel them into a lifelong Courage to Create!
After Phase I of this project, our students have enjoyed using iPads to create video presentations of a few of their projects. Having the additional iPads for our other work stations will allow us to increase the variety of ways that our students can use the devices to share their project journeys.
