My students are bright eyed, excited, eager to learn 6 and 7 year olds. Some days they're astronauts when science takes them to space. Some days they're authors when they write their own stories. Some days they're engineers, building with legos together during choice time. Some days they're adventurers, enjoying the stories of Jack and Annie and their tree house.
My students are more than their test score, reading level, or ability to focus.
My students are continually moving - reading under desks, doing math on white boards, writing at the table they find most comfortable. They are also continually growing, applying new math skills and phonics skills every day, sometimes without them even realizing that they've learned something new.
Our school, tucked away in the Washington trees, is a place that fosters kindness, respect, helpfulness, and belonging. We truly believe that every child is capable of success. Our students feel at home, and like our classroom and school are where they belong. We care about each other, and we care about learning.
My Project
My students have the chance to play with LEGOS every week in my classroom. The kids flock to the center at choice time, choosing to construct buildings, people, animals, vehicles, and more using the simple toy. My current LEGOS were kindly donated to my classroom by my younger brother - a toy he enjoyed while he was a kid as well. I know in my heart that my students deserve more!
My students are the future of our country.
They are future engineers, architects, artists, community helpers, teachers, mathematicians, and more. We are lucky to have access to many art supplies, books, paper to write, and more. However, it can be expensive to gather tools that help promote STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) learning in my classroom. With the support of this project, my students will have the chance to build and create with newer (and more) LEGOS, as well as Magna-Tiles. When playing with LEGOS, my students practice teamwork, collaboration, problem-solving, engineering, and creativity. Magna-Tiles help support student learning of shapes (2D and 3D), how shapes can be put together to create other shapes, engineering, planning, and, again, creativity. These tools and activities stimulate the mind in ways my students don't always get.
Thank you for helping support my students and their future!
