The late Rita Pierson said, "Every child deserves a champion -- an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection, and insists they become the best that they possibly can be."
My students are MY champions.
This diverse group of inner-city fifth graders never give up on themselves or their learning, and they demand the best from themselves. They have their days where a task seems too challenging at first, but through their perseverance, they discover on their own that they can most definitely handle it. These moments of discovery are happening more and more in my classroom. Every day, these students discover just how powerful they are.
Who knew that only 100 years after developing the airplane, humans would be taking commercial flights into outer space?! The world around us is developing at an unprecedented rate, and our students have to develop with it. There are skills that students will require if they are to adapt to this world, and it doesn't need to be that challenging.
Studies have shown that LEGOs develop students' engineering capabilities, and they do it in a way that is both enjoyable and approachable.
My students have the abilities to understand engineering concepts, but they need a vehicle to bring those abilities to fruition.
My students are problem solvers. They enjoy wrapping their minds around situations and finding ways to make things happen. We need to encourage this and continue pushing students in this direction. Without it, how can we expect them to keep up?
