Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are wonderfully inquisitive and boundless when it comes to their questions. They enjoy making, building, and fixing with their hands using real-world problem solving strategies. They lack the knowledge to apply what they have learned about scientific ideas when it comes to real world or actual physical building of the science projects.
Many students at our school by 5th grade, I have come to find, have never so much as built a Lego let alone assembled a car out of water bottles and powered it with a renewable resource (something we do in Science).
Having this 3D Printer would start them on their path to experiencing new scientific endeavours and preparing them for later grades and future careers.
My Project
My students have a need and desire to work on STEM projects but lack the foundational skills to work up to those goals. By working with this 3D printer they can build the parts for STEM projects, like bridges, parts for simple machines to harness renewable resources, and cars powered by renewable resources, and see how computer applications can create real world items and use those items to solve problems. Learning the practical knowledge about how things work is not enough, they need the applicational knowledge to truly learn how things work and how to fix problems.
A big portion of students have never built using scientific principles or solved problems using scientific methods and this 3d printer would help with real world applications.
