My students need rhythmic instruments like cymbals, hand drums, Lummi sticks, triangles, and a slide whistle, as well as materials for a S.T.E.A.M. project like cardboard tubes, paint, iPads, and heavy-duty tape.
My students are bright and caring children. They love to work together and learn in active ways! Our school is arts-integrated, which means we teach concepts through the arts, including drama, visual arts, creative movement, and creative writing. We also teach and foster collaboration as a key cornerstone in our curriculum.
Our students learn how to work as a group through the creative process.
They take pride in their work and love to celebrate each other's accomplishments. Our school is such a positive environment!
My Project
As an Arts-Integration school that focuses on STEAM (bringing the arts into science, math, and technology), my students will LOVE this project! They love anything to do with music and movement, so I am so excited to have the chance to teach them about the foundations of music education with real instruments and the opportunity to build their own instruments.
I am aiming to bring together musical concepts with the science of sound!
First, I will teach my students rhythm, pitch, and beat using the rhythm instruments. We will explore many aspects of music education using a I Do, We Do, You Do model. Then, we will do an ecological and recycled "Trash Art" project where students will repurpose and reuse everyday recyclable materials into instruments that make sound. We will bring in technology by recording ourselves and making iMovies on iPad minis to share with our families and the community. Learning how the traditional rhythm instruments make sound will help us create our own instruments!
