I am a teacher in a low-income, inner-city school region with a large, diverse population. Most of my students are first-generation Americans or immigrant children from a variety of South American countries. My students are faced with many challenges, both in and out of the classroom. Throughout the school year, it is our goal to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion of all! Our school is a Title I (which means a school with large concentrations of low-income students) school.
Many students in our school qualify and enter our school through the Head Start Program, which is available for children who are from families with incomes below the poverty guidelines, children from homeless families, and/or families receiving public assistance.
Some of the students in my classes are special needs students who suffer from attention deficit disorder (ADHD), are ESL students (English as a Second Language) and/or have other types of special needs. Regardless of their challenges, though, the majority of the students are very determined and eager to succeed. In spite of their personal experiences, most of my students are very active, enthusiastic learners who possess a thirst for knowledge.
Having updated technology such as the requested laptops in our classroom will provide my students, most of which do not have access to a computer at home, with an exciting opportunity to perform research, engage in graphic projects, access e-books, engage in STEM activities and use educational programs provided by our school and designed to enhance student learning as they address their individual special needs.
The use of such technology will provide my students with an opportunity to actively engage in their learning in a fun interactive way.
By engaging in activities that incorporate the use of laptops, my students will be more motivated and will be empowered to work independently toward achieving their individual goals and meeting their special needs. The use of laptops will provide opportunities for students to engage in more self-directed learning in tune with their particular learning style.
