Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Teaching freshman biology is an adventure. Students must learn hundreds of biological terms and interpret complex diagrams involving the study of life. Every biology class involves labs, reading, writing, discipline, etc. However, what makes my classroom at Lawrence High School so special is the students that walk through the door every day. The students at Lawrence High School have been through a lot. Whether it's emotionally, financially, or physically, everyone's had their battles. What makes them so special is their will power. No matter what is going on outside/inside of school, they come into my biology classroom with the will to learn. My students inspire me daily, and I do my best to spark their interest in biology and make school a continuously positive experience.
My Project
I'm extremely excited to have the opportunity to attend the STEM teacher Forum and Expo in San Francisco this summer. I can't wait get hands on with the most relevant practices related to teaching high school biology. More importantly, I can't wait to implement everything I discover into my curriculum for this school year and the many that will follow. My students deserve the best science education they can get. Attending this conference will allow me to bring back up-to-date practices to the 115 students that I will be teaching in the fall and to a 9th grade student population of around 800! Science is important for the future of our planet. I believe that positively engaging students in their high school science classrooms is a major step towards solving the current/future problems of the world as well as providing a pathway to success for the students themselves.
