I am a librarian in a low-income, high poverty school district where my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am aiming to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
Our library is the center of learning for our diverse population and students visit the library often, for a variety of reasons, and I want to continue to serve them in all subject areas such as English, math, science, social studies, and robotics.
Our elementary school is a large, urban public school with almost five hundred students. Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with over seventy percent of our students receiving free lunch. The ethnic breakdown of the school is 39% Caucasian, 37% Hispanic, 14% African American, and 8% Asian.
My Project
My students enjoy hands-on-learning activities. Throughout the year we do a variety of STEM projects in the library. These projects help build critical thinking, teamwork skills, and creativity.
This year will look different because of social distancing and online learning.
I am requesting various STEM kits to use at school when face to face learning starts again. In addition, these kits will also be available for students who choose to stay at home.
These kits will help get students (boys and girls) ready for STEM careers, since they will be exploring circuits, and engineering. The students will be able to watch videos from the IF/THEN collection to learn about different science and engineering careers and get inspired.
