Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach Math to Freshmen students with a variety of learning disabilities in a Special Day Class setting. My students are focusing their time in my classroom on learning how to problem-solve and collaborate with each other to find solutions to Math problems. Every student is at a different level in Math and differentiated instruction must be delivered to meet their needs.
All of my students have the option to use calculators as part of their accommodations but due to budget constraints, Special Education teachers at my school do not receive a stipend to get resources for our students.
Most of my students are hard workers, want to succeed in school, and do well in my class.
My Project
Scientific Calculators will help my students with learning disabilities compute math problems and see themselves as Mathematicians. Studies have found that calculator use is associated with better operational and problem-solving skills. In addition, students who have access to calculators have better attitudes toward math. Calculators can help my students with learning disabilities participate in rigorous problem-solving activities that might otherwise be too frustrating for my learners. I plan and balance my curriculum with real-world problem-solving activities and calculators can provide an appropriate tool to balance the challenge of these endeavors with the support my students with learning disabilities need. By having scientific calculators, my students will have further access to the curriculum.
