My students need sewing machines and materials to develop spatial skills and to sew reusable pads for women in developing countries in order to decrease the drop out rate of girls after puberty.

My Students
CSK is an all girls 6-12 school nestled in the heart of Atlanta and is a Title 1 School where 99% of the student population receive free or reduced-price lunch.
The young ladies at CSK are resilient, they are the roses that grew from the concrete.
They are inquisitive, full of energy, and optimistic about the possibilities outside of their immediate and sometimes harsh reality.
Despite the barriers they may encounter , these girls walk into our front doors where there is a full staff waiting to nurture their potential. We may not be able to control their home lives, however, we can certainly control their experience while at school.
My Project
Our school is launching a STEM initiative to increase the number of women of color in STEM fields. In conjunction with that initiative, the girls of our school have taken a special interest in helping women globally after learning that an estimated one in ten girls in Sub-Saharan Africa miss school during their menstrual cycle. By some estimates, this equals as much as twenty percent of a given school year and many girls drop out of school altogether once they begin menstruating.
Studies have shown that girls can be discouraged from entering the engineering field because of a lack of spatial skills that are acquired at a young age, this is often a product of girls not being provided with building and 3D-focused toys and computer programs- however, sewing can help fill that gap.
At its heart, sewing is the construction of two-dimensional pieces into three-dimensional shapes. Not only does sewing teach useful life skills, but it inspires creativity, hands-on learning, and paves the way for the makers and engineers of the future.
I am requesting sewing machines as well as starter sewing supplies: thread, bobbins, scissors, mats, and fabric in order to make reusable pads to send to young women in developing countries. The ten sewing machines and accompanying supplies will be used by students in grades 6-12. This project will help my students develop spatial skills to help spark interest in STEM fields and will cultivate a sense of community service. This project will support our STEM initiative and will make a world of a difference in the lives of the young women in developing countries that will receive reusable pads and hygiene kits.
