My students are 21st century learners. They love using technology in our classroom and I integrate it as much as possible into all of the subject areas. My students are a bunch of inquisitive learners.
With this project, I will be able to help my students foster an interest and excitement of science and encourage problems solving with STEM.
I teach at a small neighborhood school with approximately 560 students. We first opened our doors in 1950. Arts in education is a major emphasis on our campus. Our school's mission is to develop children into life-long learners as a result of a challenging curriculum, individualized instruction, high expectations, and a nurturing environment with parental and community involvement. My class is made up of 20 diverse students, from students with special needs to those who are identified as gifted and talented. I encourage my students to appreciate each other's differences as well as find similarities among each other. They are very active, creative, and enjoy learning.
My Project
Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is all around us! In order to help our students become successful, we need to provide opportunities for them to think, address problems, work together, reflect on their trials and then build upon their mistakes in order to succeed.
By exposing my students to STEM and giving them opportunities to explore STEM-related concepts, they will develop a passion for it, which will help them in their futures.
With the Lakeshore Learning Fairy Tales Problem Solving Kits my students will discover the STEM in their favorite fairy tales and naturally, inspire them to explore each challenging situation until they find a solution! They will design a house that can’t be blown down, construct a bridge that keeps 3 goats safe from the troll and build a chair even Goldilocks can’t break!
I plan on using the Legos during center time to provide Challenge Activities for my students to build and create and then write about what they have created and reflect on the process.
Exposing my students to STEM education now at a young age helps to bridge the ethnic and gender gaps sometimes found in math and science fields. STEM education breaks the traditional gender roles.
