Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school has implemented new strategies to address the issue of staggering drop-out rate of students who are classified as at risk. The school I work at is located in an area of high poverty. Our elementary students crave for a rewarding and regulating relationships but do not how to initiate them. I see the lack of social skills our students have because we are a generation of self-absorbed characteristics.
I would like to offer students with an opportunity to accomplish STEM activities as fun and educational building sets to help them become productive, creative and compassionate.
Having a bully-free fun game room will provide students with an opportunity to develop those social skills our students greatly need. Students will be invited to attend as part of a behavior reward program to promote ethical behavior, responsibility, and character. I hope that you can join us in a partnership to honor these students by donating/sponsoring for items that could be used as incentives to our school site.
My Project
Our School District has long strived to prepare career-ready graduates. To make our communities successful, we need community partnerships for student success.
Legos, building blocks, connect four are all games that help support excellent motor skills, social skills, be creative, productive and humane.
Students will have the opportunity to learn about teamwork, turn to taking abilities, manipulate, organize and solve challenging games. In my classroom, I have puzzles, board games, coloring books, Legos, sensory stations, books, art and craft stations for students to come in during their recess and lunch. I have seen a tremendous improvement in social skills and school attendance because students look forward to engaging and socializing. Bean bag toss, Tic Tac Toe, Wooden color blocks, Mr. Potato Head, Topple Board game, Guess Who game, are opportunities for students to acquire the proper skills to be social and develop cognitive interactions with others. There are times when I have to leave campus for meetings or home visits and my classroom is unavailable; however, students will knock, wait and sit by the door waiting for me to let them in. Although at times it can be overwhelming having over 50 students in my class, when I see students engaged, having fun, respecting each other, taking turns, sharing and accepting outsiders (sped kiddos, nerds,) it is all worthwhile.
My responsibility as an educator is to prepare children to be successful and productive in life. Therefore, I will continue to invest in programs that change our children’s potential and provide them with an opportunity to be productive, creative and humane.
