Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a Title I school with many economically disadvantaged students. I am the resource teacher to students with special needs. My students learn differently than other students due to autism, ADD, ADHD, Intellectual Disabilities and learning disabilities. My students come to school each day eager to learn.

They continue to surprise me with their curiosity and love of learning.

Last year we learned about Pompeii and Mt Vesuvius. We read books about the events that followed the eruption and drew diagrams of volcanoes but what really made an impact was building their own volcano and making it erupt. They had to research how to build a model of a volcano and how to make it erupt. It was amazing to see how many different ways they accomplished the same goal and it stuck with them. They can tell me about the city of Pompeii and what makes a volcano erupt. They can name the different parts of a volcano and describe how to make their own model.

My Project

My students are amazing. Sometimes, they're underestimated because they have a disability, like autism, ADHD, ADD or a learning disability but they're smart kids.

These STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) projects will allow them to experience something new and exciting.

I try to find engaging activities that they will enjoy but they're learning without realizing it! They have been learning about robots in their science class, as well as in the resource room and asked if we could get one for our class. I love their excitement and want to build on that.

The majority of my students learn best with hands on projects. These kits will allow them to build robots starting at a beginner level and then moving up to the LEGO Mindstorm set. The set includes lesson plans to help me guide them through the process. I want to show my students that learning is fun and these kits will help with that.
