This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work in a Title I school in Oakland, California. Our school has a 100% free school lunch population. My students are on the first tennis team this school has had. This program gives our economically disadvantaged students of color from all cultures, areas, and family incomes an opportunity to learn how to play tennis. This will enable them to become more engaged in life and school.

My Project

My students need to build concrete things as well as virtual things with their computer code. This helps them understand the processes more concretely and reinforces the engineering processes, of making trade-offs, trial and error, careful measurements to build grit.

This helps build more solid engagement and a richer learning experience

Alas, today's kids don't build much once they get past 6th grade, the academic work is mostly theoretical and paper driven. These supplies support a "hands-on" approach where they build something and through that process understand how to build and refine their projects.
