The Language Learners at our Title I school need engaging activities to enhance their understanding and heighten their interest. We have a high population of students for whom English is a second language. We are also designated as a Title I school due to the high numbers of students who qualify for free or reduced cost lunches. We have difficulty doing any kind of fundraising. We use most of our discretionary funding for staff to work directly with the students in small groups. We've made great gains in student growth, but still need to use every opportunity to engage students and keep them excited about learning.
We will use these materials to explore math, creative thinking, and problem solving during our club meetings. Students will use the Krypto cards to find equations for the target solution. They will use the Soma Cubes to improve their spatial sense as they construct 3-D shapes that match a 2-D drawing. The club members will find three cards from the Set Game that have the attributes of color, numbers, shape, and shading either the same or all different. The tangrams will be used to not only make a square, but to build 2-D shapes that match a variety of drawings. We will also learn to play chess and checkers in preparation for a tournament at the end of the year. All of these activities will provide students with a variety of experiences that support STEM learning.
These materials will help the students be innovative as they problem solve and find creative solutions to a variety of tasks and challenges.
The materials will be used this year for 3rd 4th, 5th, and 6th graders. We will also use these materials in years to come as this club becomes a tradition at our school.
