Help me give my students updated desks and chairs as well as a banner with markers and bouncy bands for active learners in order to create a proper environment that is conducive to learning.
I am a teacher in a low-income inner-city school region with a large population of immigrant refugee families from a variety of Latin American countries including Cuba, Puerto Rico, Nicaragua, Honduras, and several others. Our school is a Title I school. My students are faced with many challenges, both in and out of the classroom.
Many students in our school qualify and enter our school through the Head Start Program, which is available for children who are from families with incomes below the poverty guidelines, children from homeless families, and/or families receiving public assistance.
Last year, our school, students and their families were affected by several hurricanes. Some families lost their homes and had to relocate into our school community/district. Regardless of their challenges, though, the majority of the students are very determined and eager to succeed. In spite of their personal experiences most of my students are very active, enthusiastic learners who possess a thirst for knowledge.
My goal is to create a mobile STEM learning center within our classroom. I wish to provide my students with opportunities to actively learn while collaborating with others arranged in a variety of flexible seating situations. The goal is to enable my students to work in a well-organized environment that is conducive to learning while engaging in hands-on STEM activities and meeting my students' special needs.
Several of my students have been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
These students would greatly benefit from the rolling desks, chairs and bouncy bands which would specifically benefit active learners with attention deficits. These rolling desks and chairs will help students remain on task and actively involved in their learning. The banner and markers will be used to list STEM activity messages and instructions for group work. Together with the bouncy bands these materials will enable those with special needs to focus while working on STEM learning activities in a fun, dynamic fashion.
This mobile learning center will allow my students to move around the classroom forming pairs and groups or working individually depending on the activity at hand while using the chairs and desks on wheels as well as the bouncy bands fitted on existing classroom chairs. These materials will provide my students with a much needed organized, structured environment and with a rare opportunity to actively engage in learning activities that will stimulate their curiosity and will increase their thirst for knowledge.
