Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand." by Confucius
To the greatest extent possible, I want to ensure that my students are learning what I am teaching. Moreover, I expect them to not only remember, but also to understand.
My students have struggled with school and especially with mathematics.
Algebra has been the gatekeeper which has kept them from earning credits toward graduation, and they are now finishing their k-12 education at a continuation high school. Many of them have always been weak in mathematics because they don't understand.
My Project
My students need math manipulatives and visuals, such as dice, multilink cubes, and posters. These items will allow students to actually "do" math. Rather than sitting passively, students will be measuring, taking samples, experimenting, and calculating. The manipulatives will provide the opportunity for hands-on math so that students will have an experience with which they can connect the mathematics that they are learning.
We often hear students ask, "When will I ever use this?" This project has the ability to make this question extinct in my classroom.
These students have fallen through the cracks of our system for many years. This project provides them with the opportunity to get the credits that they need to graduate as well as have a rich experience using mathematics.
