Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach an excitable group of bilingual second graders. They show up to class every day ready to learn, participate and have fun. Together we learn to meditate, create art and take care of classroom plants along with our regular classroom learning.
Our school is in Dallas and nearly all students come from low-income households.
Despite the many setbacks my students face, they greet me every day with a smile and they inspire me to do right by them.
I see so much potential in them from the things they work on at home and bring back to school. Whether it's a bridge made out of popsicle sticks, a Carnival-inspired mask or a thoughtfully written letter, they are awesome!
My Project
Centers can be the funnest time spent in the classroom for many students. It's a time when they can use the concepts learned in traditional lessons and apply them using hands-on, engaging and cooperative activities.
These centers will be used year-round to reinforce concepts and learn new strategies from classmates.
The What's the Best Strategy Center will help students keep their numeracy skills sharp and prepare them for multiplication and division for the next grade level. The STEM Science Station and Bridge Building Engineering centers will help bring science concepts to life. We will have a lesson on bridge building where we learn about designing to meet heavy loads and aesthetic needs. This center will help further challenge my students and help them develop new strategies to share with classmates. While the English Language Development Writing Center will help my English language learners with sentence structure and writing conventions.
