Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Young children learn best when they are interested and engaged, and with this project, I am trying to provide my students with STEM materials that will stimulate a life-long love of learning.
I have 46 intelligent, motivated, and fun-loving 3-, 4-, and 5-year-old students in my pre-Kindergarten classroom.
My students attend an inner city school where there is 100% free or reduced breakfast and lunch, and ninety percent of my students are English language learners. They are a wonderful mix of backgrounds and personalities, from quiet scholars to energetic explorers. Our classroom culture is built on a foundation of teamwork and responsibility, and my students take to heart the value of shared learning experiences.
My Project
My students love working with hands-on materials that they can manipulate and explore while learning. We will use manipulatives and hands-on resources such as peg number boards, prisms, and pattern blocks to engage in visual and kinesthetic learning of both math and science. In our classroom now, we have no science materials and very limited math supplies. I believe that new, engaging resources, including magnet wands, magna-tiles, and science discovery kits, will help the students understand key math and science concepts as they physically manipulate objects and learn through both self-directed and teacher-guided exploration of materials. My students constantly ask for new science and math activities and crave the wonder and accomplishment that comes from investigating a new material or concept. Students will discover how to solve problems independently and will develop a sense of curiosity and initiative that is so important in today's world.
Instilling a love of learning and exploration into young students will help them succeed not only throughout their career as a student, but will transfer into their lives beyond school.
I want to thank everyone in advance, as this is such an important cause to my students. Math and science can be such exciting subjects for young children, and I know if we can provide them with new and engaging resources, we can accomplish so much!
