Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are culturally, ethnically, and academically diverse. Our student population includes many high-needs learners, and 95% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Over 75% of the students I work with come from non-native English speaking families and speak Spanish as the primary language in their home.
As a teacher in a low-income and high poverty school district, many of my students have limited English and are in inclusion classrooms.
Despite the difficulties my students endure in and out of the classroom, they truly enjoy coming to school. It is great to see all of my students collaborating and having fun working together! I strive to foster that enjoyment and create meaningful learning experiences for my students.
My Project
Students have greater success learning through hands-on activities that reflect real-world learning. In order to foster this learning growth, I am bringing STEM activities into the library curriculum as well as leading a STEM club after school. Students will use the magnetic blocks to create their own structures while developing problem-solving and communication skills.
STEM hands-on learning supports our English Language Learners and beginning readers.
Students can demonstrate their knowledge and skills without having to depend on being a fluent English speaker. Students can show their learning by building and creating instead of relying on language. I hope to foster each child's creativity and inspire them to have successful careers, possibly as future architects and engineers.
